PRIVACY POLICY

The short version
Owlish does not collect your personal information. There are no accounts and we operate no servers. Your videos, your bedtime, and your streak stay on your device — we never receive them, and we could not retrieve them if we wanted to.
The one exception is your subscription, which is handled by a payment provider. They receive a random identifier and the fact that you subscribed. They never receive anything you record.
What we collect
Nothing you create. Owlish has no user accounts, no login, and no backend of our own. Your recordings, bedtime, streak and settings are never transmitted.
The only information that leaves your device relates to your subscription, and it is described in full under "Subscriptions" below.
What stays on your device
The following is created by Owlish and stored only in the app's private storage on your iPhone:
- Video recordings you make ("confessions")
- Your bedtime, wake time, and sleep preferences
- Your streak history and night outcomes
- Your app settings
This information is never transmitted to us or to anyone else. It is protected by iOS file encryption and is unreadable while your device is locked. The video archive can additionally be locked behind Face ID.
Deleting the app deletes all of it permanently. There is no backup and no recovery — we cannot restore it, because we never had it.
Subscriptions
Owlish uses RevenueCat, a third-party subscription management provider, to process purchases and keep your subscription valid across reinstalls and devices.
RevenueCat receives:
- A randomly generated identifier for your installation. It is not linked to your name, email, Apple ID, phone number or device identifier, and we cannot use it to work out who you are.
- Subscription events — that a purchase, renewal, trial start or cancellation happened, and when.
- A small number of usage events, limited to: reaching a step during setup, recording your first confession, a verified night, exporting a compilation, and a night where the alarm went unanswered. These are counts and timestamps.
RevenueCat never receives:
- Any video you record, or anything derived from one — no files, no thumbnails, no transcripts, no filenames.
- The prompts you were shown, or what you said you stay up for.
- Your bedtime, wake time, streak history, or any app setting.
- Your name, email address, or any other contact detail.
Apple processes the payment itself. We never see your payment details at any point.
RevenueCat's own privacy policy is at https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy.
Camera and microphone
Owlish requests camera and microphone access solely to record confession videos at your explicit request. Recording only occurs when you actively choose to record. Nothing is captured in the background, and no recording is uploaded.
Motion sensors
Owlish reads your device's accelerometer while you are actively using the bedtime verification screen, in order to detect that the phone is face-down and still. This data is processed on your device in real time and is not stored or transmitted.
Sharing
If you choose to share a video, your device's share sheet passes the file to whichever app you select. That transfer happens between you and that app — Owlish is not involved and does not upload anything. Once shared, the receiving app's own privacy policy applies.
Subscriptions
Subscriptions are processed by Apple. We never see your payment details. Apple may provide us with anonymous, aggregated sales data. Apple's privacy policy governs that relationship.
Crash reports
If you have opted into sharing analytics with Apple in your iOS settings, Apple may provide us with anonymised crash reports. These contain no personal information and no content from your recordings. You can turn this off in Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.
Children
Owlish is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. The App is intended for users aged 13 and above.
(13 is the practical floor under COPPA. Because v1 has no social feed and no uploads, the content risk is low. If the friend feed ships in v2, revisit this — user-to-user video sharing is a materially different question.)
Your rights (GDPR, CCPA, and similar laws)
Laws including the GDPR and CCPA give you rights to access, correct, delete, and port your personal data, and to object to its processing.
Because we do not collect or hold any of your personal data, these rights are satisfied by design. All your data is already in your sole possession on your device. You can view it in the app, delete individual items, or delete everything by removing the app.
We do not sell personal information. We have never sold personal information.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, we will update this page and the date above. Because we hold no contact information, we cannot notify you directly.
